Our journey

As we grow we are becoming more and more electable.

Based around Petersfield a local Green Party was formed in the 1990s. It became inactive many years ago. The East Hampshire Green Party as we know it now was revived in 2015.

After a flurry of activity in 2015 we became somewhat less active until the being of 2019. In May of that year we fielded 10 candidates in the East Hampshire District Council election. At the end of the year we put up a candidate for the 2019 general election.

From 2019 the membership had been steadily growing, until Covid struck. The Covid restriction severely checked any further growth.

However in September 2021 a by-election for the Horndean Downs ward saw us win our first District Council seat. This was a stunning achievement. We increased our share of the by three times on the 2019 vote. Our candidate Blossom Gottlieb became the first Green councillor anywhere in Hampshire

At the beginning of 2022 the membership was 80% higher then it was at the beginning of 2019. Our growth and success continued.

In the 2019 district council election we increased as share of the vote over the 2015 results.

Not all the seats that we contested in 2019 were contested in 2015. However an aggregate can be taken across all the seats that were.

This shows that we increased our share of the vote from 18% in 2015 to 29% in 2019.

Given our size and activity at the time putting up 10 candidates for the 2019 district election was real achievement. Even with just 10 candidates our overall share of the vote was 8%.. This really was a great result

Our “first past the post” voting system is deeply undemocratic. A truly fair democratic system would have given us 3 seats.

Hampshire County Council elections 2017 - 2021

Like the East Hampshire District Council the Hampshire Council Council is dominated by Conservatives. We believe that the community is best served by balanced councils. We will always put public good above party politics. In the 2021 elections the Liberal Democrats stood a realistic chance of winning the Alton Town division from the Conservatives. Therefore we withdrew out candidate to give them the best chance of winning the “first past the post” vote.

In the 2017 election we stood 5 candidates out of the East Hampshire’s 7 county divisions.
In 2021 we had a full slate. But, of course, put up only six candidates. In 2021 we more that doubled our share of the vote.

In 2015 share of the vote was 4%. In 2021 is was 10%. An increase of 6%
